Robinson Out?

Posted in Lookupsport, Ball Sports by Lookupsport Blog on the November 27th, 2006

Well within a few days of being given the vote of confidence by Rob Andrew after a “lengthy meeting”, Andy Robinson is set to quit as England coach following their defeat to a second string RSA side.  I thought I heard that he had been sacked but according to the BBC he is set to quit tomorrow on the understanding that he will still be compensated.  Martin Johnson looks set to take over.  Robinson has presided over the worst string of results in English Rugby history and has seen his side booed off twice, which has never happened before to my knowledge.  The only concern for me is that Robinson was Woodward’s number 2 and presumably therefore a top notch coach.  Therefore, unless he has become a poor coach over night, the recent run of results might just be that we do not have the quality of players that we need to compete at the top level.  A worrying thought with the 6 nations about to kick off and the World Cup next year.

Usual case of “get sacked - get pay-off”. Why is it professional sport is the only industry where you get a pay-off for being crap at your job?!!

I’d love to agree with you Paul - I know that the spot light tends to fall on sport and I used to work with the son of a professional football manager, whose father was drawing 3 salaries at once having been sacked twice in quick succession.
However, the “being crap at your job” payoff isn’t just restricted to sport. I think the general rule is the more you get paid the better your contract and the bigger the pay off - there are a large number of “crap” blue chip company chairman out there who have been given huge pay offs as well. No names mentioned to protect the rich and rubbish.

Looks like the BBC had it wring about Robinson by the way - 24 hours wrong at least - perhaps he was busy negotiating for that 24 hours…
